Two persons identified as Tobechukwu Aguonu and Uche Igwe have been sentenced to death by an Olokuta High Court in Akure, Onod State for armed robbery.
The convicts were dragged before the court after being arrested by men of the state police command for being involved in armed robbery in November 2016.
They reportedly robbed one Augustine Okolie of his vehicle, money and other valuables at Olu Foam area of Akure at gunpoint.
They were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery to which they pleaded not guilty.
During the trial, Okolie’s family testified against the duo, explaining how they attacked and robbed them of the valuables. The police witnesses invited to testify in the case also claimed to have retrieved two expended cartridges used by the robbers.
Following the testimonies of the witnesses, the trial judge, Justice Yemi Fasanmi, held that there was indeed an armed robbery attack on the couple, saying the defendants used firearms to terrorize their victims.
The judge also held that “the prosecuting counsel had proved that there was an armed robbery case beyond reasonable doubt.”
Fasanmi added that the stolen vehicle recovered from the convicts in Anambra State also served as a proof of their involvement in the crime.
Delivering his judgment, Fasanmi ruled that they were guilty as charged and sentenced them to death by hanging.
