Minister of transport and director-general of the President Muhammadu Buhari campaign organization, Rotimi Amaechi, has been caught on tape describing Lagos State as a glorified village.
It is the latest in a series of damning statements made by the minister during a conversation with some journalists.
Amaechi had in an earlier recording leaked by Phrank Shaibu, an aide of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, said the only way Nigeria can change is for everybody to be killed.
In another one, the minister was heard saying President Buhari does not listen to anybody and has scant regards for problems facing the country.
In a third recording released on Monday, Amaechi described Nigeria’s former capital as a “glorified village”.
The minister said the city lacked basic infrastructure compared to Abuja, the country’s capital.
He added that Lagos has a poor road network, no running water and is infamous for vehicular traffic congestion.
“I live in Abuja, tell me where else we have the infrastructure. Lagos is a glorified village. The only difference between Lagos and other cities is the fact that business is in Lagos, everybody is there doing business, so you can at least have food,” he said.
“If not tell me what else you have in Lagos? 1,000 plus megawatts. That’s all. That’s what you have. What else do you have? No water, there are no roads. When you hear traffic jams in Lagos or any part of Nigeria, where are there no traffic jams in Abuja? The reason why you meet traffic jams in Lagos is that there are no roads,” the former governor of Rivers State added.
In spite of the controversy that trailed the earlier released recordings, Amaechi was on Monday inaugurated into the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council.
Buhari is the chairman of the council while former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu, is vice chairman.
Amaechi retains his post as director-general.
