The Rapid Response Squad operatives Tuesday prevented an unknown man from jumping into the lagoon in a suicide attempt on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State.

“RRS officers on patrol along Third Mainland Bridge have prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon in a suicide attempt,” RSS tweeted.

The rescued man has been handed over to Adekunle Police Station for investigation, RSS said.

Attempting suicide is a criminal offence in Nigeria, under Section 327 of the Criminal Code Act, and carries a penalty of up to one year in prison.

The anachronistic law was inherited from the British colonialists. But it was abolished in Britain under the Suicide Act of 1961, which was enacted a year after Nigeria gained its independence.
