An Iraq war veteran who slashed his Britain’s Got Talent finalist girlfriend’s neck in a gruesome murder has been jailed for life.

Desmond Sylva, 41, stabbed Simonne Kerr more than 70 times when she was in bed at his flat.

The day before, Sylva, who served with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in Iraq and Kosovo, told his brother he might kill himself or someone else.

Sylva was convicted of murder after a trial last month.

The jury heard the Jamaica-born defendant attacked his 31-year-old partner after she returned from work as a nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in central London on the morning of August 15 last year.

The nurse joined the B Positive Choir after the death of her six-year-old son Kavele from complications of sickle cell disease.

She performed with the choir in last year’s final of the ITV talent show, which was won by Lost Voice Guy.

After murdering Ms Kerr, Sylva called his brother Damian, a serving signalman, and emergency services.

Jurors have heard the 999 call in which Sylva said: “Can I have police please, I’ve just committed a murder.

“I’m ex-Army and I’ve got lots of mental health issues.”

When police arrived, they discovered Ms Kerr lying naked on the bedroom floor covered by a bloody duvet at the flat in Clapham, south London.
