The statue of King Leopold, who carried out genocide in the African country Congo during the colonial period in Belgium, was damaged in Brussels.

Tensions broke out between demonstrators and police during protests that began in some parts of Brussels.
During the demonstrations, a group of protesters went up to the statue of King Leopold of Belgium and opened the Democratic Republic of Congo flag. The demonstrators shouted “killer” slogans.

The sculptures of King Leopold in Gent, Antverp, Halle, Ostende and other cities were also painted in a red color. Many sculptures were destroyed by demonstrators.
Activists also have King II in the country. He launched an online campaign demanding the removal of all of Leopold’s statues.

The petition opened for signature on the international campaign site “Change.org” called for “the removal of King Leopold bust and statues by the end of June”.
Approximately 55 thousand people have supported the signature campaign, which was launched for the removal of the statues of King Leopold, who was in office during the Congo, when Belgium was the colony.

June 30, the independence day of Congo, has been determined as the end date of the campaign.
Historians state that in the late 1800s, millions of Congolese died in the colonial regime of King Leopold 2.
King Leopold is also known for “displaying” people he brought from Congo as “slaves” at the zoos in Belgium.
