Mali junta releases ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita a week after his arrest

0

Mali’s new military rulers have released ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who had been detained since the country’s coup on August 18.

The junta known as the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), said on Facebook on Thursday, August 27, it was “informing public and international opinion that former president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been released and is currently in his residence”.

“President IBK is free in his movements, he’s at home,” a spokesman for the junta, Djibrila Maiga, told AFP, referring to Keita by his initials, as many Malians do.

”He is still being guarded by army officers since his release late Wednesday,” said a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Keita, 75, dissolved his government and resigned under pressure from soldiers hours after the staged coup. He was elected to office in 2013, just over a year after his predecessor, Amadou Toumani Toure, was himself ousted in a coup.

His release comes a day after the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) suspended the membership of Mali, increasing international pressure on the military junta for seizing power in Mali.

Hero boy, 5, saves mum’s life as she lay in coma by calling number on toy ambulance

0

A brave five-year-old boy saved his mum’s life after she fell into a coma by calling the emergency number on his toy ambulance.

Josh Chapman watched his mum Caroline pass out in the sitting room of their home in Telford, Shropshire. She was in a diabetic coma, unconscious on the floor and Josh quickly leapt into action.

He spotted the number 112 on the side of his toy ambulance and dialled it. He was immediately connected to a police operator as the number connects straight to emergency services, and is recognised in Europe.

Proud mum Caroline, 41, said Josh called the number and told paramedics: “Mummy was playing cars and then her eyes closed.”

Full-time mum-of-two Caroline said little Josh managed to dial for help despite never using a phone before, thanks to his favourite toy ambulance.

Officers were able to locate Josh and his younger brother at the property and paramedics arrived to treat Caroline.

Caroline had been playing in the sitting room at home in Telford, Shropshire, with Josh and her other son Harry, who is 18-months-old, when she collapsed on July 28.

Caroline said: “I had just been playing cars with the boys and I suddenly blacked out.

“I woke up surrounded by paramedics – and a lot of toys – and they explained to me that Josh had called them and given them our address.”

She went on: “I couldn’t quite believe it. He has never used a phone before. He had looked at the number on the side of his toy ambulance and dialled 112.

“I didn’t even know that number was on there but it worked and I am so proud of him.

“Usually I feel my levels dropping but this time I didn’t. He said he went to fetch some sweeties but there was none in the jar so he called an ambulance.

“He told them, ‘mummy was playing cars and now her eyes have closed’. They stayed on the phone with him until they got here.”

Caroline explained: “He loves his cars and the emergency vehicles are his favourites. So he went straight to his favourite toy for assistance.

“There were toy cars everywhere by the time police and paramedics got here and my youngest son had fallen asleep on me. It must have been quite a scene but the emergency services were great.”

Brave Josh was later invited for a tour of his local police station, where he was shown around by officers.

A white teenager has been charged after two protesters were shot dead while they were protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, who refers to himself as a vigilante, walked past cops with his gun and even bragged about his role as a vigilante moments before the bloodshed on Tuesday, August 25.
As Black Lives Matter activists gathered to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake, Kyle Rittenhouse came out with his AR-15-style rifle and told a reporter that he was patrolling the streets of Kenosha to provide medical assistance and protect local businesses from looters. He said he had his rifle to protect himself.
The protest soon turned bloody and two people were shot dead just before midnight on Tuesday. One was shot in the head and one in the chest. One of the slain men has since been identified as Anthony Huber.

A third man, a 36-year-old from West Allis, Wisconsin, was shot in the arm but his wounds were not believed to life-threatening.
Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, was arrested on Wednesday August 26 and charged with first degree intentional homicide after viral video footage showed the teen shooting three people during the third night of Jacob Blake protests in Wisconsin.

He was arrested in his hometown of Antioch, Illinois – 15 miles from Kenosha. Court records say the teenager “fled the state of Wisconsin with the intent to avoid prosecution for that offense.”
The Milmaukee Journal Sentinel noted that based on Wisconsin law, Rittenhouse is being charged as an adult.
According to video footage and witness accounts, the gunman first shot someone at a parking lot, then jogged away, stumbled and fell in the street, and opened fire again as members of the crowd closed in him.
Just moments after the shooting, Rittenhouse was filmed walking up to police with his hands in the air and his semi-automatic rifle slung across his body. He was apparently allowed to walk by despite members of the crowd yelling for police to arrest him.

Like Jesus Christ, I’m tempted to back out of Biafra struggle- IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

0

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says like Jesus Christ, he is sometimes tempted to back out of the struggle for the realization of the sovereign state of Biafra.

Kanu shared his thoughts while reacting to the recent clash between some members of the secessionist group and security agents in Enugu state on Sunday, August 23.

In a letter to members of the secessionist group, Kanu compared himself to Jesus Christ who said to God at the Garden of Gethsemane “if it be possible, let this cup pass from me” when faced with temptations.

The letter in part reads

“In my most private moments, when I reflect on this struggle and its fallouts, I have often been tempted, like Christ, to ask that this cup be passed from me. I am sure you all feel the same in many fleeting moments of despair that is common with the fragile human spirit.

So, as we mourn this latest mass murder of our people, let us all take some comfort that they didn’t die in vain, they died in honour, they fell in defence of freedom and their precious blood will be best requited by our collective and abiding resolve to never back down until Biafra is restored.”

He, however, vowed to continue in the fight for the emancipation of his people.

Man mauled to death by two beloved white lions in horror attack while playfighting in South Africa

A nature lover who reared two rare white lions from when they were cubs was mauled to death by them in a horror attack.

Conservationist West Mathewson, 68, was playfully wrestling his beloved lionesses, Demi and Tanner, on Wednesday, August 26, when one of them turned on him.

His wife Gill, 65, attempted to save her husband by distracting the 400lb lionesses, but they had already inflicted fatal injuries.

He was badly injured and died from his injuries on his way to the hospital.

This isn’t the first time the lionesses have killed someone. In 2017, they clawed a farmworker to death at Mr Mathewson’s safari known as Tree Top Lodge at Hoedspruit near South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

However, West Mathewson had continued to playfight and exercise them every day, believing they would never attack him.

A lodge spokesman confirmed that Demi and Tanner would “definitely not be put down.”

They added: “West loved those cats as much as he loved his children and spent much of the day with them every day.

“They didn’t mean him any harm and it was just a tragic accident.”

Despite the previous fatal attack, tourists had continued to flock in their thousands to walk with the animals.

Cop who shot Jacob Blake in the back is identified as more details from the case are released

0

The Wisconsin cop who shot Jacob black in the back seven times has been identified as officer Rusten Sheskey, as more details from the case have emerged.

The shooting, which occurred on Sunday, August 23, is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

An initial account of Sunday’s incident fingers Sheskey as the trigger man.

According to the Department of Justice, Kenosha Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence after a female caller reported her boyfriend was there when he was not supposed to be.

During the incident, the DOJ says police attempted to arrest Jacob and used a taser to try and stop him, but it didn’t work.

Instead, Jacob walked around his vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and leaned forward as Officer Sheskey held onto his shirt and fired 7 shots into his back.

The shooting left Jacob paralyzed from the waist down and his family said he will need a miracle to walk again.

The DOJ says Jacob Blake said he had a knife in his possession. DCI agents recovered a knife from the driver’s side floorboard in Blake’s car. The DOJ says no other weapons were found in Jacob’s car.

The state says the DCI is continuing to review the evidence and determine facts and will turn over its investigative report to a prosecutor once complete.

Married man whose wife is threatening to kill with machete makes startling claims in Ibadan

0

Toheeb Shafiu, a barber, on Wednesday dragged his wife of three years, Fatimo, before an Ile-Tuntun Customary Court in Ibadan, seeking a divorce for threatening to attack him with a machete.
Shafiu, who resides in Beyerunka area in Ibadan, said: ” I am better off living alone than dead.
“Fatimo has been after my life since I impregnated another girl that I dated before I married her.
”She has made attempts on my life with a machete. She attacked me on a number of occasions with broken bottles.

”I am not safe anymore living under the same roof with her. She destroyed my belongings and curses me at will,” Shafiu alleged.
NAN reports that Fatimo, who opposed the prayer for divorce, refused to comment on the allegations levelled against her.
She instead submitted that her husband was an unrepentant cheat.
“Shafiu lied to me that he was not seeing the woman he got pregnant. I later discovered that he kept her in his parent’s home.
“As a result, he comes home only when he feels like. When I challenged him, he held me in a chokehold and beat me,” she alleged.
Delivering a ruling, Chief Henry Agbaje, the court’s President advised the couple to maintain peace.
Agbaje called for more evidence to support their claims.
He requested both parties to produce their relatives and adjourned the matter until Aug. 31 for judgment.

Why you must stay away from men who have lots in common with you – Actor Timini tells ladies

0
A popular Nigerian actor-presenter, Timini Egbuson, has advised ladies to stay away from men who seem to have a lot in common with them, warning that such persons can be manipulative.
He spoke during a recent episode of his vlog, where he bared his thoughts on five tell-tale signs to watch out for signalling that a partner’s motives for initiating relationships might not be genuine.
“Over sexualization, like everything is sexual or when they (the man) oversexualize everything. Something could happen and water spills and they be like, ‘Oh, are you wet?’,” Egbuson said.
“Or she says, ‘I like my fruit hard’ and he goes like, ‘You like it hard, don’t you?’ If a guy tells you that, he’s giving you sign he just wants to smash. I might be wrong, what do I know, but yeah.
“It’s another red flag if he’s over-romantic. You just started talking to him yesterday and he’s like he’s been dreaming of you and can’t sleep. Or, ‘I’m hungry but I’ll not eat until you’ve eaten’.
“If he shakes your hand and spins you around, I’m telling you, that’s the way he’s going to spin into your vagina and scatter everything in your life. Be careful of that, come as real as you can.”
Egbuson also warned about men who would readily play games on the intelligence of their female partners just to get down with them or in an attempt to see how they react to certain situations.
“If he’s playing games to see your reaction like lying he doesn’t have cash or saying he can’t afford a certain place. That guy is already being manipulative,” the 33-year-old actor added.
“It’s too early in the relationship for him to start showing his tendencies. Mama, slap am, chop the food, make sure he pays, and leave that place.”
“Have you ever been on a date with this guy and he seems to have everything in common with you? You’re talking things and he’s finishing your sentences and looks so cute.
“Mama, Japa! When a guy has too many things in common with you, that is a red flag. Nine times of ten, that guy is making calculated moves to manoeuvre his way into your pant.”

Rich Nigerians to pay more as Buhari approves new electricity tariff

0
President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the implementation of the proposed cost-reflective electricity tariff for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Buhari gave the approval on Tuesday.
According to TheCable, rich people will pay more while those classified as “poor” will not be affected by the increase in tariff.
Also, Buhari has approved a one-year waiver of 35 per cent import tax for prepaid meters.
In January, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had announced that there would be an upward review of electricity tariffs across the country from April 1.
However, it directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to suspend the proposed tariff increase in March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June, the national assembly had persuaded the DisCos to defer the plan till the first quarter of 2021 because of the pandemic on energy consumers.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan had maintained that consumers should be properly metered before the tariff hike is implemented.
With the approval of the president, the new tariff regime is expected to kick off on September 1 and to be reviewed quarterly.
This is said to be a requirement for the approval of a proposed $1.5 billion World Bank loan for the power sector
According to the new tariff via a NERC order dated December 31, 2019, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) residential customers R3 that were paying N27.20 per unit will now pay N47.09 and N63.42 by next year.
For the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) customers, the R3 category paying N26.50 per unit will now pay N36.49 per unit and later N58.
Meanwhile, Buhari approved a one-year waiver of 35 per cent import tax on prepaid meters to facilitate increased provision to consumers for accurate billing.
The approval was as a result of the request by Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, to fast-track the deployment of prepaid meters under the meter asset providers (MAP) scheme.
In a statement, Yunusa Abdullahi, special adviser to the minister on media and communications, said the application of the levy on imported meters has created a significant challenge to the smooth implementation of MAP scheme.
“The 35 per cent levy was imposed on the recommendation of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, to encourage local production, as well as protect investments in the local assembly of electricity meters,” Abdullahi said.
“An important feature of the MAP regulation is a gradual up scaling of the patronage of local manufacturers of electricity meters with an initial minimum local content of 30 percent with the potential of significant job creation in the area of meter assembly, installation and maintenance.
“Even though the 35 percent was in existence since 2015, the MAP regulations by NERC in 2018 to bridge current electricity metering gap did not factor the 35 percent levy in arriving at the regulated cost of electricity meters to end-users (consumers).
“This is to immediately bridge the gap between the demand for electricity meters and local supply. It is also envisaged that this will provide protection for local electricity meter manufacturers and the opportunity to ramp local capacity in the production of meters.”

Man getting married today explains why he’s taking his wife’s surname

0
A man getting married today, August 26, revealed that he’s changing his surname to his wife’s surname and he explained his reasons.
Ryan Morrison, now Ryan Miyoshi, shared a screenshot showing him rebranding his image with his new name.
He explained that he chose to take his wife’s surname, Miyoshi, because his own surname, Morrison, was chosen at random.
He said his grandfather was a Priest and they weren’t allowed to get married. His grandpa did so in secret and so, to keep it hidden, the surname Morrison was chosen randomly from a phone book. On the other hand, his new wife’s surname “can be traced back for hundreds and hundreds of years”.
Ryan said another reason why he’s taking his wife’s Japanese surname is that his father-in-law has no sibling and his new wife has only one sister, and that means “there’s not a whole lot of people to carry on the Miyoshi name”.
Other men who took their wife’s surname also shared their stories.
One commenter explained that in Colombia everyone has two surnames, taken from the father and mother’s name.
