If you currently hold a Canadian passport, you actually hold one of the most powerful ones in the entire world! Passports all around the world were ranked for 2019, and Canada came out as one of the top countries. The Global Passport Power Rank 2019 has ranked the Canadian passport the fourth most powerful in the world. In other words, travelling can be much easier for Canadians when compared to many other countries globally.

The Global Passport Power Rank compares 199 passports to get their results, looking at United Nations member countries and territories.

Currently, Canadians are able to visit 116 countries without a visa and 50 countries by obtaining a visa on arrival, according to the Global Passport Power Rank. For instance, earlier in June, Brazil officially waived prior tourist visa requirements for Canadians.

Canada’s passport shares the number four ranking with several other countries. According to the list, countries including Norway, Sweden, Singapore and France, also have the fourth most powerful passport globally.

As for the country that holds the most powerful passport in the world? That would be the United Arab Emrates. Passport holders from the country can currently enter 173 countries either without a prior visa or by getting a visa on arrival.

So how did the Passport Index determine which passports were the most powerful in the world? According to their website, “to determine the individual rank of each passport, a three-tier method is applied:

    1. Mobility Score (MS) – includes visa-free (VF), visa on arrival (VOA), eTA and eVisa
    2. VF portion of their score vs VOA
    3. United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index 2018 (UNDP HDI) is used as a tie breaker. The UNDP HDI is a significant measure on the country’s perception abroad.”

Canada’s neighbouring country, the United States, took the third spot on the ranking. U.S. passport holders can visit 117 countries without any visa and 50 countries require a visa on arrival.
